Continuing on decades of popular one week field trips to Latin America, This year’s annual JADE March field trips to Latin America will be to Nicaragua. Territorially the largest country in Central America, Nicaragua is quickly becoming one of this region’s most popular destinations. Considered by many to be among the friendliest of the nations of Central America, Nicaraguans are reaching out their hand of invitation to visitors by providing excellent hotels, foods, arts and destinations. Join us in 2010 for nine days of exploration and relaxation in this splendid country.

Our host will be Dr. Harvey Williams, Professor Emeritus of Sociology at the University of the Pacific in Stockton, California. Dr. Williams is one of our country’s leading experts on Nicaragua who, over the past 35 years, has lived, studied, taught and extensively traveled in Nicaragua. Joining him will be Dr. John Allensworth, Senior Lecturer in Geosciences at Georgia State University who also has traveled throughout Nicaragua and will lecture about the awesome, vast and varied volcanic landscape. Dr. Frank Erickson, Professor Emeritus of Latin American Geography at Kent State University, also has traveled extensively in Nicaragua, will be with us to explain the historic evolution of Nicaraguan society and settlement. And, as we have done so many times over the past number of years, all participants will have the opportunity to benefit by the expertise of Kathie Lentz, a noted professional photographer, who will provide photographic instruction that will culminate with having participants’ photos exhibited in several post field trip gallery shows. Over the years, these photographic shows have become popular attractions in northeastern Ohio.

Has anyone spent spring break in Nicaragua? What was your experience?

Want to know more about our trip, email us for more information, ronders@kent.edu.

Our “summer school” for 2009 is a tour of Bhutan—with its temples, its mountains, its monasteries, and for us also the memories of Maurice Johnson, who has travelled with us for many “summer schools.” He traveled with Gerald Read in the early days—to Soviet Union and China—when both were closed. As we travel with Martha and his family and friends, we will treasure his love of TRAVEL2KNOW.
